Independent Medical Examinations

An Independent Medical Examination (IME) is an objective, third-party medical evaluation performed to answer specific legal or administrative questions. No physician–patient relationship is established, and no treatment is offered or implied.

Dr. Korzeniowski conducts IMEs for insurers, defense and plaintiff attorneys, employers, and administrative agencies. Every evaluation is conducted in accordance with applicable standards and documented with page-cited evidence.

What IMEs Address

  • Causation — What caused this condition, and is it related to the claimed event?
  • Apportionment — What portion of impairment is attributable to the injury vs. pre-existing conditions?
  • Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) — Has the claimant reached a plateau in recovery?
  • Impairment Ratings — Percentage determinations per AMA Guides 5th or 6th Edition
  • Work Capacity — Return-to-work capabilities, restrictions, and limitations
  • Treatment Review — Medical necessity and appropriateness of care rendered

Examination Protocols

  • Observers (attorneys, adjusters, representatives) permitted with advance written authorization
  • Recording allowed via stipulation or court order
  • Written authorization should accompany referrals to avoid scheduling delays
  • Examination integrity is maintained — no coaching, interruptions, or participation from observers

IME Rebuttal Reports

A critical, evidence-first review of an existing IME report — evaluating the methodology applied, the records relied upon, the standards invoked, and whether the conclusions are supported by the documented evidence.

Rebuttal Scope Covers

  • Standard application — were AMA Guides applied correctly?
  • Causation analysis verification
  • Impairment rating cross-check against complete record
  • Functional opinion review

Optional Enhancement

  • Physician attendance at the original IME to observe and document examination protocols
  • Independent examination following rebuttal review when warranted
